Carbon Monoxide Detector False Alarms - A Big Problem!

!±8± Carbon Monoxide Detector False Alarms - A Big Problem!

False positive alarms emitting from a battery operated residential CO alarm are a common and often misunderstood problem. Countless frantic calls to fire or clueless building officials drive everyone's tax rates up and raise everyone's blood pressure when the fault usually lies with the unit itself or the homeowners own neglect and or misunderstanding CO levels in general.

Check your battery annually, properly ventilate your home and appliances and most importantly have all CO emitting appliances cleaned and serviced! Don't rely on these cheap detectors to gauge the proper operation of your heating equipment. That's not a good idea and can have its consequences.

Have more than one unit available to test the actions of the other. These modern CO detectors are often made very cheaply and loose their ability eventually to accurately detect DANGEROUS levels of carbon monoxide in your home. Some even new detectors emit false positive alarms.

Remember there is CO in EVERY home! Weather from smoking, cooking, heating appliances or breathing!

Whats important is the LEVEL of CO present in your home. If you are unsure and want to find out there are numerous CO level detectors that are sold on the internet. That is the only sure way to pinpoint sources of CO and weather the PPM (parts per million) is over 30-40 PPM which is the OSHA maximum for a work place atmosphere.

At about 200-400 ppm headaches are common symptoms whereby dangerous levels are well into the upper hundreds and thousands of ppm.

Understanding CO levels in your home can save your health and even life but don't automatically assume that when your detector sounds an alarm that you should run for the hills or buy expensive new heating equipment. A little detective work on your part can save you a lot of needless worry or money!
